Indonesian Culture & Arts Festival (ICAF)
31 July 2021
PPI Greater Leeds proudly present:
Indonesian Cultural & Arts Festival (ICAF) 2021
An annual event by PPI Greater Leeds, which consists of a Cultural & Art Exhibition and Show that is adapted from a legendary folktale. The story is brought to life with traditional dance performances and music.
This year we will adapt the story of Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang is one of the famous popular folktale in Indonesia, originated from the region of West Sumatra and is passed through generations. Inspired by the Ramayana Ballet performed in Prambanan Temple, Yogyakarta, we will tell the Malin Kundang folktale through a series of traditional dances and songs across the archipelago.
In a small village in the island of Sumatra, there lived a woman who was widowed before the birth of her son. His name is Malin Kundang. Growing up, he had a dream of becoming the first man to leave his homeland and sail the Indonesian archipelago. Through his adventures, he experienced new cultures, fell in love, and exposed to a series of misfortunes. Will he safely return to his home village and reunite with his mother?
The list of dances that will be performed are:
1. Tari Nandak
2. Tari Lenggang Nyai
3. Tari Menanam Padi
4. Tari Mambri
5. Tari Ratoh Jaroe
Strategic Contributions to Indonesia (SCI)
Strategic Contributions to Indonesia or the SCI is PPI Greater Leeds’ big annual event where the students within the Greater Leeds area and the UK could contribute to the development of Indonesia in the form of a publicly open seminar.
We invite experts, professionals and scholars in our chosen topic for the event to hold an exchange of views and share their knowledge on the topic. Through the SCI, we also provide a great opportunity for all Indonesian students and members of the Indonesian diaspora across the UK to engage in building a global network with the guest speakers and the audiences.
